Recommendation 3: Fuel Efficiency Through SmartwaySM
The American Trucking Associations recommends that shippers and carriers join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWaySM Transport Partnership Program in order to achieve greater national gains in fuel efficiency and carbon reduction.
SmartWaySM is an innovative collaboration between EPA and the freight industry to increase energy efficiency and significantly reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution. Its goal is to look beyond the fuel economy of individual vehicles and use new management techniques and technologies to increase the amount of cargo moved per gallon of fuel for the whole fleet.
The program encompasses the whole freight industry — shippers, truckers, rail carriers, even dealer service centers and truck stops. Industry partners are required to develop a three-year program and to monitor their progress for EPA. SmartWaySM partners are expected to save an estimated 554 million gallons of fuel in 2008. Over the next nine years, CO2 reductions are estimated at 119 million tons.
